How to Ease Pain Caused by New Aligners

Starting orthodontic treatment with clear aligners like Invisalign or CandidPro is an exciting step toward a straighter, healthier smile. However, just like with traditional braces, it’s common to experience some initial discomfort, especially when switching to a new set of aligners. This discomfort is a normal part of the process, as your teeth begin to shift into their new positions. Fortunately, there are several effective strategies you can use to ease the soreness and make your aligner experience more comfortable from the start.

Wear Your Aligners Consistently

It might sound counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to reduce discomfort is to wear your aligners as much as possible, ideally, 20 to 22 hours per day. Removing them frequently can actually prolong the adjustment period and increase soreness. The more consistently you wear them, the faster your teeth will adjust, and the discomfort will subside.

Start New Aligners at Night

A helpful trick is to switch to a new set of aligners right before bedtime. This allows you to sleep through the initial hours of pressure, giving your teeth time to begin adjusting while you rest. By the time you wake up, the most intense discomfort may already be over.

Use Orthodontic Wax

While Invisalign aligners are designed to fit snugly and smoothly, new trays can occasionally irritate your cheeks, lips, or tongue. If you notice rough edges or areas causing friction, you can use orthodontic wax to create a barrier between the aligner and your soft tissue. Your dentist or orthodontist can also trim or smooth sharp edges if needed.

Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

If you’re experiencing persistent soreness, over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. These medications reduce inflammation and alleviate pain, especially during the first couple of days with a new aligner. Always follow dosage instructions and consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

Stick to Soft Foods

During the first 24 to 48 hours of wearing a new aligner set, your teeth may feel especially tender. Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods like yogurt, soup, scrambled eggs, smoothies, and mashed potatoes. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that could increase sensitivity or cause discomfort while chewing.

Apply Cold Compresses

If your jaw feels sore or inflamed, applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth can help numb the area and reduce swelling. Use a wrapped ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes at a time for relief.

Use Aligners Chewies

Chewies – small cylindrical foam tools – help ensure your aligners fit snugly against your teeth. Biting on a chewie for a few minutes several times a day can improve the fit and distribute pressure more evenly, reducing sore spots and enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment.

While some discomfort is a normal part of the aligner process, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right strategies, you can ease the initial soreness and focus on the positive results ahead. If pain persists or worsens, be sure to contact your orthodontist.
